A tablet is a portable personal computer. It comes with an LCD touchscreen display and mobile operating system. The size makes it feasible for individual use, especially because it can fit in small places. This makes it convenient for users to work anywhere as long as there is wireless connection.
The earliest tablets were an example of pen computing technology. The first patent for a system that recognized handwritten characters by analyzing the handwriting characters by analyzing the handwriting motion was granted in 1914. The idea for the tablet computer was born in the 1960s. Some colleagues at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Centre dreamt up the Dynabook. The main purpose was to give children easy access to any digital media. They worked so hard on the concept but because of technological limitations back in the day, they were not able to move past that initial concept stage. Next camealong the GRiDPad in 1989. Although fictional models of the tablet were dreamt up to be this futuristic Star Trek-esque data pad, GRiD Systems Corporation came up with a 10-inch monochrome screen that ran MS-DOS and supported a stylus input. In 1987, Apple Computer started a project dedicated to tablets. They sponsored a contest to the design a tablet. This contest had a lot of entries and the point was to the find a design that would become the "personal computer of the year 2000". The winning entry was named TABLET from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
